California eviction court documents, explained in plain English

Every form has a number in the corner and a clock attached to it. Find the paper you were handed, read what it means and what to do, and preview or download the official Judicial Council form without leaving the page.

The forms below are the current official versions published by the Judicial Council of California, hosted here so they can be previewed on the page. Court forms change; the revision date is shown on each document's page, and the court's own copy is always linked.

Court papers, in the order they arrive

UD-105 Court form

Answer, Unlawful Detainer

The UD-105 is the form California tenants file to answer an eviction lawsuit. What it does, the defenses it covers, the fee waiver, and how to file it on time.

Must be filed within the response period on the summons, normally 10 court days from service

UD-110 Court form

Judgment, Unlawful Detainer

A UD-110 means the court has entered judgment in your eviction case. What it says, what happens next with the writ and the sheriff, and the options left.

The writ can issue immediately; the sheriff's notice gives 5 days before lockout

Landlord notices that come before the lawsuit

There is no official form for these. The landlord writes them, the law says what they must contain, and their defects become your defenses later.
